On the Efficient Treatment of Vertical Mixing and Chemistry in Air Pollution Modelling

چکیده
Reaction-Advection-Diffusion problems occurring in Air Pollution Models have very stiff reaction terms and moderately stiff vertical mixing (diffusion and cloud transport) terms which both should be integrated implicitly in time. Standard implicit time stepping is by far too expensive for this type of problems whereas widely used splitting techniques may lead to unacceptably large errors for fast species. Recently proposed alternatives are the so-called source splitting and the ros2 method combined with approximate matrix factorization (amf). In this paper we compare these two methods with the standard Strang splitting method in a framework of an operational global dispersion model. The results of the tests favour the ros2-amf scheme.

Vertical profiles of NO3, N2O5, O3, and NOx in the nocturnal boundary layer: 1. Observations during the Texas Air Quality Study 2000
[1] Nocturnal chemistry in urban areas can considerably influence the composition of the boundary layer by removing nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons, as well as changing the size and composition of aerosol particles. Although these processes can have a severe impact on pollution levels at night and during the following day, little quantitative information is available. In particular, the vertic...
متن کاملSolving vertical transport and chemistry in air pollution models
For the time integration of stii transport-chemistry problems from air pollution modelling, standard ODE solvers are not feasible due to the large number of species and the 3D nature. The popular alternative, standard operator splitting, introduces artiicial transients for short-lived species. This complicates the chemistry solution, easily causing large errors for such species. In the framewor...
متن کاملRemoval of ammonium ions from wastewater: A short review in development of efficient methods
Ammonium ions wastewater pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems today. The treatment of ammonium ions is a special concern due to their recalcitrance and persistence in the environment. In recent years, various methods for ammonium ion removal from wastewater have been extensively studied. This paper reviews the current methods that have been used to treat ammonium ...

In issues related to air pollution, the thickness of the boundary layer is known as the depth of the mixed layer because the pollution on the ground surface is mixed in this entire layer through turbulence processes. In most cases, the boundary of the area is clearly visible on big industrial cities. The depth of the mixed layer has an important effect in the concentration of air pollution whic...
